TopicResearch and Technologies at Aston University – Advanced fibre grating devices and applications

Time 201597日(周一)上午10:00-11:30

Venue 5-326学术厅

Speaker Prof Lin Zhang (Ph.D), the Head of the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Power Engineering and the Deputy Director of AiPT at Aston University.

Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AiPT) is the one of largest research centres in the UK. With more than 70 active researchers, it has an impressive portfolio of grant funding, industrial and international collaborations, spin-out companies, highly cited research papers and patents, all demonstrating excellence in the field of photonics. AiPT has a world-recognised record of achievement in high-speed optical communications, fibre-optic devices and nonlinear photonic technologies. The research profile of AiPT includes theoretical, numerical and experimental studies on optical communications, fibre lasers, fibre sensing technologies, bio-photonics and laser material processing and fibre grating fabrication. AiPT is well funded from a range funding bodies including EPSRC, UK Innovate, EU, Royal Society, Leverhulme Trust and industry. AiPT has a strong record of successful international collaboration. During the past five years, AiPT has co-authored publications with colleagues from more than 70 UK and overseas institutions and companies, and has hosted more than 150 research visitors for work periods ranging from one week to one year.

Prof Lin Zhang (Ph.D) is the Head of the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Power Engineering and the Deputy Director of AiPT at Aston University. Her research interests are primarily in the field of optical fibre grating devices and the applications in optical communications, signal processing, bio-photonics, and fibre laser and smart sensing technology. Her research output so far includes ~400 research papers published in peer-review journals and international conferences.

The talk will give an overview of the research activities of the AiPT with the emphasis on fabrication techniques and sensing applications of advanced optical fibre grating devices created in normal and special optical fibres by UV- and femtosecond-laser inscription. A range of novel optical fibre grating devices and systems based on Bragg, long-period and tilted structures fabricated in D-shape, multi-mode and multi-core fibres will be discussed. The most recent developments in tilted grating based novel polarisation devices and their function in fibre laser systems will be reviewed.
