报告摘要:When immersed in a thermal reservoir, objects like cell membrane and actin filament are susceptible to bending deformations due to thermal excitations. These types of thermal undulations can be both disruptive and useful which will be demonstrated through two examples in this talk. First, we will show that the density of molecular bonds, connecting the cytoskeleton of a cell to the extracellular matrix, must be larger than a certain value in order to “suppress” the fluctuations of the membrane and hence enforce stable adhesion. This finding explains recent experiment observations that tight cell adhesion patches can only be formed when bonds were spaced more closely together than a critical spacing, whereas almost no adhesions between the cell and the substrate were formed for spacing larger than this critical value.
The second example concerns with the actin-based motility of cell and Listeria. We will demonstrate the essential role of thermal undulations in the generation of propelling forces, large enough for the continuous movements of cell and Listeria, by unidirectional actin polymerizations. A mechanics model is proposed to describe the force generation capability of actin filaments and the comparisons between model predictions and various experiment data will also be presented.
