SAA has one National Key Discipline, two Zhejiang Provincial Key Disciplines. Mechanics is a major discipline, which offers programs for doctoral degrees. SAA and its brother colleges have nine subordinate subjects together£ºGuidance Navigation & Control and Spatial Information Technology offer programs for doctoral degrees£¬ the other seven offer programs for master¡¯s degrees. In addition, they have Engineering Mechanics which consists of two research directions, engineering mechanics and aerospace engineering, both of them offer programs for Bachelor degrees.
Solid Mechanics/Engineering Mechanics
This subject belongs to the Mechanics Specialty, which was founded in 1958, was one of the earliest Mechanics Specialty in China. Wang Rendong, Xie Yiquan and other famous Mechanical experts established Mechanics Departments and Engineering Mechanics Research Department, which developed to Engineering Mechanics Institute afterward. After the combination with teaching and research section in 2006, it was renamed ¡°Institute of Applied Mechanics¡±. The Solid Mechanics became Provincial Key Discipline in 2003, and became National Key Discipline in 2007. The engineering mechanics became Provincial Key Discipline in 2009. There are 26 faculty members in SAA. They are well known for their excellent overall qualities, high academic standards, rich practical experiences, and strong innovative spirits. There are 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 National Scholar of Thousand-man Project, 1 Changjiang Scholar£¬ 4 ¡°excellent talents of the new century¡±, 11 professors, 13 associate professors. 80% of them have a doctoral degree. In the past 6 years, SAA has experienced rapid development: it has undertaken many state-level, large-scaled research projects, and has yielded fruitful results both in education and research. There are more than 150 state-level research projects in total, of which 28 projects are from National Science Fundation of China,3 of them are key projects; 1 project is from National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars; 4 National ¡°973¡± Projects; 5 ¡°863¡± Projects and some military defense projects. The total amount of research funds accumulated to 40 million RMB yuans. There are about 500 journal or conference papers in total, of which more than 200 are indexed by SCI. Over near 6 year¡¯s development, the Institute of Applied Mechanics has trained large quantities of high-level qualified scientists and technicians with wide ranges of knowledge and strong ability of adaptability. The Institute of Applied Mechanics has trained more than of 90 masters, more than of 20 doctors, 8 post-doctoral program scholars. Many graduates have produced excellent results in teaching and researching.
Under the leadership of academician Yang Wei and Zhu Weiqiu, according to the team construction, base construction, major construction and talents construction, we are working at distinct research directions and have many outstanding achievements.
Our overall development objectives are as follows: in 4 years, we will import 4 excellent talents every year, make an effort to take more major project based on aeronautics and astronautics and high-speed train, and arrive world-class level on some important research directions.
The Institute of Fluid Engineering (IFE) in Zhejiang University has more than 40 years research and teaching experience in fluid engineering. Its strong and broad technical foundation provides opportunities in both engineering practice and scientific research. Our undergraduate program is designed to provide students with the fundamental scientific training in the fields of fluid and solid mechanics, as well as the detailed engineering education for immediate entry into the job market. Our graduate program offers masters and doctoral degrees in Fluid Mechanics and Fluid machinery & fluid engineering, as well as post-doctorate program available. Professor Shao Xuemin is the current superintendent. At present, there are 14 faculty and staff members, more than 100 undergraduate and 30 graduate students are registered in our institute.
In the latest three years, the institute undertook more than 30 projects covering multiphase fluid mechanics, industrial fluid mechanics, turbulent theory and experiment, computational fluid mechanics, modern fluid experimental measuring techniques, and micro-fluid mechanics. These projects were supported by the National Nature Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, other ministries and provinces. The researches undertaken by the members of the institute contain two aspects. One is the research of fundamental theory. It mainly includes subjects of turbulent theory & experiment, multiphase flow, etc. The other is engineering application research, which applies the theory of fluid mechanics, numerical computation method and modern experimental measuring technique into engineering problems. The research targets are quality optimization of the products and industrial applications.
The institute has obtained 3 national awards and more than 10 provincial and ministry awards. Among them, "Research and application of internal flow of theory of centrifugal fans and computer aided design system" and "Development and application of extractor fan for nitrogen fertilizer production" won the 1st and 3rd National Scientific and Technological Advance Awards; "High pressure centrifugal fans for iron melting" won 3rd National Invention Award; "Theory of the coherent structure generation and evolution and its control" won the 2nd Science and Technology Progress Awards of Zhejiang Province. The institute has published 18 books and over 500 papers in national and international kernel journals.
Aeronautical and Astronautical Science and Technology
ZJU sets up three second MA programme under the Aeronautical and astronautical science and technology with agreement in 2005, which are flight vehicle design, aerospace propulsion theory and engineering, aerospace mechanics engineering. Simultaneously, two DA programme are built such as aerospace information technology, aeronautical electric and control. In addition, a second DA programme named navigation, guidance and control has already developed under the control science and engineering.
The research team includes Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Sciences (Rong-jun Sheng), Cheung Kong Chair Professor (Yao Zheng), Qiushi Professor (Hua Meng) and so on. Currently, there are more than 30 faculty members, including 1 member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Sciences, 1 Cheung Kong Chair Professor, 1 ZJU Qiu-shi Professor, 11 professors, 11 associate professors, 8 assistant professors and 2 part-time members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The overall object of the discipline is combined with the national high technology development strategy requirements, tracing the national and international development front. The studies are focused on the advanced science problems, such as the new flight vehicle design, new propulsion technology, navigation, guidance and control, aerospace information technology and aeronautical electric technology and so on. The research fields of the discipline are among flight overall design and analysis, hypersonic technology, unmanned flight vehicle technology, hypersonic numerical simulations, new propulsion technology, advanced aeronautical mechanics theory and technique, automatic flight control technique and equipment of small unmanned flight vehicle, aerospace intelligent robot cooperation control technique and system, aerospace computation engineering, distributed display and virtual reality, infrared image process, technology of deep space survey, and so on.
Recently, we carried out deep and system researches on the related fields. These research jobs are supported by the national natural science fund, the national funds for distinguished young scientists, the national defense 973 funds, the national defense 863 funds and so on. The total funds are more than 150 million RMB. In three years, 134 papers have been published in the national or international journals and conferences. Among them, more then 80 papers are index by SCI or EI. Part of faculty has joined several national major projects directed by the 3rd Institute of China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp., 1st and 5th Institute of China Aerospace Science Corp.. Hypersonic aerodynamic and supersonic combustion experiment facilities are under construction. In 2008, the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Aerospace Numerical Simulations and Verifications (B) was established.
Though this discipline in ZJU is built later than others, it is one of top in the universities under the ministry of education, and facing opportunity for its fast developments. During the research process, the discipline development will focus on the basic application problems in the projects, and be combined with special application requirements. To further promote the discipline development, the university and college have adopted various measures to enlarge the research team, extend the approaches to research projects, and improve the education environment and infrastructure.
