Abstract:

Recently, 2D materials, such as graphene, MoS2, silicene, phosphorene et al, have drawn a great deal of attention due to their remarkable electronic, thermal, magnetic, optical and mechanical properties. Understanding the structural and mechanical properties of these 2D materials is critically important for the development of 2D materials-based electronic, optoelectronic and sensing devices and also their reinforced composite materials.

We report our recent research work on the mechanical properties of graphene, MoS2, phosphorene, and their nanostructures using different simulation methods, such as molecular dynamic simulations, density functional tight-binding simulations, and first-principles calculations, focusing on the following aspects: 1) Effect of substrate on the structure stability of phosphorene nanoflake; 2) a dual dislocation/vacancy character of defect in MoS2 monolayer; 3) A pseudo Hall-Petch relation in polycrystalline graphene; 4) effect of defects on the mechanical properties of polycrystalline graphene upon indentation; and 5) the mechanical properties of edges and implications.

 Speaker Introduction:

Prof. Zhang Yongwei is Principal Scientist and Deputy Executive Director at Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), A*STAR, Singapore and Adjunct Professor at Singapore University of Technology and Design. He received Ph.D from Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi’an, China. Subsequently he worked at Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China; Division of Engineering at Brown University, USA; Institute of Materials Research and Engineering, A*STAR, Singapore; and Department of Materials Science and Engineering at National University of Singapore. His interests focus on using theory, modeling and computation as tools to study the relationship between structures and properties of materials with applications in material design, property engineering, mechanical-thermal coupling and mechanical-electronic coupling et al. He has published over 320 refereed journal papers, and delivered over 50 invited/keynote/plenary talks and lectures.
